Sparking a Love for Science

My students need informational text and pictures books to spark their interest and fulfill their curiosity about scientific topics.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like finding something that grabbed your attention like nothing else? My students have things grabbing their attention everyday, and science is usually not one of them, but that's because they haven't read these books yet.

My 25 first graders come from diverse backgrounds.

Our public school in Georgia is over 80% poverty and many of the students live with other extended family members or may be homeless. In my class alone, there is a foster child, abandoned children, and children who just need someone to believe in them. With all the outside pressures that my students face everyday in their young lives, they need a strong outlet to learn and grow as individuals in a safe environment. I believe our school, and my classroom, is that kind of environment.

My Project

Through the introduction of these books to my students, they will learn in ways that may have been difficult before. Instead of boring worksheets, my students can learn through reading and exploring through hands-on learning. Students will gain new insight and knowledge into different scientific topics. My students will be introduced to science in new and exciting ways through reading. Maybe a child who hated to read will suddenly fall in love with reading simply because they read a book about plants or the weather. The possibility really is endless when books are accessible to children.

This project is so important because literacy is so vital in today's world.

With many children hating to read, giving them the opportunity to read informational and nonfiction texts will help them become better readers. I hope that through generous donations, my students will gain a new appreciation and a deeper understanding of science.
