My Students

I teach 9th grade English and this is such a special, significant year in my students’ lives! These young men and women are transitioning into high school where the expectations are higher and the real world is just around the corner. My two main goals as a 9th grade teacher are: 1. To strengthen writing skills in preparation for upper-level classes and life after graduation and 2. To build an appreciation and love for literature.

In order to accomplish both of these goals, it’s important for my classroom to have a wide variety of engaging texts available for my students to access on a regular basis.

My Project

These high-interest young adult books will help me provide a plethora of options for reading in my secondary classroom. They will most certainly make a difference in my students’ learning because choice reading is directly connected to increased student-engagement and academic growth. It is my goal to provide my students with 40+ minutes of dedicated reading time each week, during which they can read whatever they choose. These books will specifically give my struggling readers and those who have never found their “niche” when it comes to literature a variety of options that will allow them to read independently on their own grade level.
