Spark Young Readers Enthusiasm Through Animal Studies

Students in my class need a class library of non-fiction books at their reading level and watercolors sets in order to illustrate the animals they are reading about.

My students are lured in by the idea of being animal scientists. I teach 24 second graders in a high-need community. One quarter of my class are English Language Learners. Half my class qualifies for the Title I reading program. More than half of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Some qualify for Special Education. Most of my students do not have books at home. If they do, the books are not high interest or at their reading level. Our school library has a limited supply of books that my students are interested in or are able to read.

My students are thrilled to study animals when reading non-fiction books. They write descriptively, they write research papers and they share their writing by reading to the class. They are then experts in the field and their self-esteem and reading ability soars. They are so proud.

My students have studied groups of animals. I would now like to encourage them to study characteristics of animals and how these help the animals to survive. Non-fiction books and watercolors would help them write, illustrate and label their work.

If you choose to sponsor this proposal the students would be so appreciative. They love to learn, write, illustrate and share their writing with the class and others. To encourage this would support their learning for many years to come.
