Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, kind and eager to learn! They absolutely love learning to read as well as hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to persevere as they find solutions! Prior to school closing, they attended school each day ready to be engaged in a second language that would prepare them to compete in a global society and to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Many students may have difficulty participating in online schooling opportunities at home because of lack of supplies and resources.
They come from low-income households.
Our school is nestled eight miles from the US border with Mexico.
Their parents may be struggling to sustain themselves due to Covid-19 restrictions. Understandably, school supplies are not at high priority when food and shelter are needed.
My Project
The use of whiteboards is a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. The students use their whiteboards for guided practice and to record their strategies/solutions as well as those being modeled by their peers. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What becomes a problem is the fact that with shifting our teaching to home schooling, my students do not have the materials needed to participate in virtual lessons and/or complete assignments.
