I teach special education students in a high poverty district, where 60% of the students are economically disadvantaged. My student's perseverance, despite their challenges inspires me every day. I have students with disabilities ranging from specific learning to hearing impaired to emotional.
One of my students came from Puerto Rico last year without any access to hearing aids his entire life and therefore is still developing basic language skills in three different languages (Spanish, English and ASL).
Despite his challenges he is happy every day and still determined to learn. All of my students are excited learners and truly try their best to succeed in their own special ways.
My Project
I need to expand my classroom library. Many of my students are reading well below grade level, most at a second grade level. Having a variety of books at my student's instructional level available to them will keep their enthusiasm of learning how to read alive. Finding books that my students are interested in and at their level are critical components to increasing their abilities and desire.
Some books such as Wonder are great books to read aloud to a group as it will give exposure to literature at their grade level and also teach them relatable lessons they can use in everyday life.
