My students come from a very diverse background. Many are from low socioeconomic homes (yes, some are homeless), while other have a stable home life. For this project, many of my students are Spanish-speakers, however they do not have a formal grasp of their first spoken language.
In other words, they were raised in a Spanish speaking home, but never studied the grammatical structure of the language.
This class is a Heritage Spanish class which will prepare students to meet district, state and National bi-literate qualifications for high school graduation. Our goal is to develop fully their bi-literate skills so that they have more professional bi-lingual opportunities in life.
My Project
A new mandate from our district for 21st-century learning states that native Spanish-speakers demonstrate bi-literacy to satisfy graduation requirements. To meet this qualification our students are in need of classroom sets of novels to practice reading skills and literacy strategies to increase proficiency. Therefore, we are seeking a classroom set of Spanish Language books, in particular "Esperanza Rising."
This is exciting because, for the first time, students are held accountable to become TRULY bi-literate which will provide them higher education opportunities and/or professional positions with higher income potential.
My mission and passion are to help middle school students start their official bi-lingual journey so that they can actually read, write and speak in two (or more) languages.
