Spanish Student Magazine Subscription

My students need materials to read during our FVR (Free Voluntary Reading) unit. The Spanish magazine "Ahora" produced by Scholastic is a great resource written at my students' level.

My Students

My students are a truly unique group. They study at the only pre-professional public fine arts high school in their large district. One third of the students are African-American and one third are Latino.

I have the privilege of teaching Spanish to these emerging dancers, actors, singers, writers, and painters who attend school from 8:00AM-5:00PM daily.

Our conversations about culture and language are rich and insightful, and our teachers incorporate a lot of teaching about artists from the countries our languages are spoken in.

My Project

Students do a lot of reading on their phones nowadays. Many schools are following the e-trend and transitioning to iPads and Chromebooks that contain all student textbooks and assignments.

I believe that students' language learning improves by reading printed, colored magazines that are written at their level and have their interests at heart.

I have coveted the Scholastic Spanish magazine "Ahora" for awhile now, but never thought that I'd be in a place to obtain it. But of course, DonorsChoose exists for pipe dreams like this!

A subscription costs $8.00 per student, and it comes with six issues. I foresee using them in three contexts as I start compiling the magazines:

*First, a source of reading during our Free Voluntary Reading unit in Spanish 3 in May

*Second, I intend to replace a current unit with a new unit structured from a variety of articles from among the six issues, with students getting to use the actual magazines instead of photocopies

*Third, any of my Spanish students from any class could read these whenever they finish something before the rest of the class like a test or a written activity (no, you can't get your phone out - read this magazine)

I really hope to be able to put "Ahora" magazines in front of my students this May, and do a whole unit with the issues next year!
