My students need to read books by Spanish speaking authors reflective of their heritage. This shows we value their home language, family, and culture.

My Students
My 2nd and 5th grade English learners attend a diverse school in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Their families immigrated to America from all over the world. Many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Being fluent in more than one language will open many doors for my students.
It is an asset that should be celebrated. I encourage my students to discover their talents, to explore their interest, to learn about their heritage, and to dream big!
My Project
I want my students to be proud of their culture and proud of being multilingual. School is a place to help students develop a positive self-identity. Students will have an opportunity to take home the books and read them with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and/or siblings. This provides families opportunities to bond through reading books.
Having access to books written in their home language by Latino and Latina authors provides students with opportunities to see their lives reflected in the books they read.
It shows that the school values their culture and views language learning as additive instead of subtractive.
