Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Majority of my students are newcomers to the United States. I teach a Bilingual ELA class made up of amazing 5th/6th graders from all over South America, Central America, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. They are very eager to learn and very sweet. They are known by majority of the school because whenever they see an adult, they greet them with a "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" in unison.
I am very blessed to have such a wonderful group of students.
My goal is to help them become confident bilingual young men and women.
My Project
Imagine yourself entering a new country, not knowing the language that is spoken, being handed a book in that language, and asked to make inferences based on the protagonist's actions and dialogue. This is the situation my students are faced with. Although, we are trying to transition them into speaking, reading, writing, and listening in English, it's difficult to ask these things of them within one year.
I am looking to obtain Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief in Spanish, so that students can understand concepts in their native language first.
This novel will help to build students' background understanding of the archetype of the hero's journey and its continuing significance in modern literature. They will read complex informational text about the "hero's journey" archetype, and then through writing and discussion use this archetype as a lens to understanding Percy's experiences. In the end, they will be able to understand how Percy's experience aligns with the hero's journey, citing evidence from both the novel and informational text. In order to complete this task, they will need the novel in Spanish.
Please be a part of putting a smile on my students' faces.
