Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Dual Language Program has a critical shortage of quality Spanish literacy materials to use with students in the classroom. This program was developed to serve our high-poverty minority students at the kindergarten level. Research shows that students who participate in dual language programs have higher levels of academic achievement, higher levels of proficiency in their second language, are less likely to drop-out and more likely to go to college than their monolingual peers.
Approximately half of the students in the program are Hispanic native Spanish-speakers and the other half are native English-speakers (the majority of whom are African-American). It is a program within the school and is one of only a few in existence in North Carolina. We implemented this program using bilingual certified teachers already working at our school and available resources already on-site to reduce the cost of implementation.
As Coordinator of the Dual Language Program, I have struggled to find funds and resources for the development of the students' literacy skills in Spanish. We especially need Spanish-language and/or bilingual books for the classroom libraries as well as big books in Spanish to use during shared reading and read-aloud times, phonics manipulatives, and other resources to teach decoding skills and phonemic awareness in Spanish.
These materials will be used by all the students participating in the dual language classroom -- 64 students this year and around 100 students next year when we expand to first grade.
Our students are already showing great gains, even in its first year. With these donated materials, our students will progress even further and will be stronger first grade students in the following year.
