Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you were read to? How it felt to be able to hold your first book and be able to read it on your own? To feel the pride in being able to read words and understand their meaning? For my students, the classroom is where all of these experiences happen.
All of my students are English language learners, many of them being first generation in this country, coming from impoverished communities and families.
Students are taught literacy skills in their primary language and then transfer all of those skills to English as their schooling progresses. As first graders this is the year when they learn to read on their own and their love for reading grows. However because of the family background for many students, school is the only place were they are able to access books and are exposed to the many different genres, authors and characters that they learn to love.
My Project
The resources I am asking for are a classroom set of children's classic literature books for our listening center. Students will be able to enjoy being read to while practicing reading skills on their own. They are able to associate the words on the page to the words that are being read to them and track their reading from left to right. The books will be used for comprehension skills as well, along with a draw and write sheet that relates to individual books.
The love for books and literature begins earlier than later....A classroom room set of listening center books with greatly improve our literacy skills and comprehension skills as our love for reading grows.
