I am such a lucky lady. My school day is varied in a way that keeps me fresh and my students interested. I am lucky enough to teach four Spanish classes a day, an African American Studies course, and Honors English for Freshman. We have some very outdated textbooks, but I strive to keep things interesting. Unfortunately, in the area of Louisiana that I teach, there are not many Spanish speaking people. So, I want my students to be able to enjoy a novel they are interested in (and is inspirational and part of pop culture)while reading the Spanish language. This is an incentive for their "buy in" of the Spanish language. As we all know, fluency in Spanish will open many doors in their futures, even if they can't see it now. I would like to get them interested in Spanish by allowing them to see the use of our lessons through their ease with reading an interesting novel, completely in Spanish. My school has a high rate of free and reduced lunch students, we are a feeder school still trying to fully integrate black and white society through educational equity, and I am a 2005 Teach for America Corps Member teaching 11 students dislocated due to Katrina. I have approximately 100 students in all four classes and may have a higher number next year. My students will grow from these books becuase they will see direct relevancy to our lessons and grammar knowledge. Furthermore, the books will facilitate our reading comprehension strategies initiated school-wide. We have to find interesting subject matter in order to convince our students that reading is "fun" and that they can understand what they read, especially when they are interested. I know my students will love the novel I have selected because it is a part of popular culture. I have chosen this novel because of its representation of language my students learn in their first and second years of Spanish and because it is a great book! This proposal is part one of a two part submission. I would like to have another book as Phase II in order to allow the students to read an inspirational story in Spanish. Thank you for your consideration. My students are ready to READ!
