Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our first grade classroom is full of imagination, laughter, and excitement. We are a very fun and energetic class that learns Spanish through reading, working on wonderful science and social studies projects, creating our own fiction and non-fiction texts and many other interesting activities!

This is my fifth year teaching in the USA and I am honored to teach a group of wonderful first graders.

My students spend half of their day learning first grade subjects in Spanish as part of the dual immersion program at our school. There are 44 children, aged 6-7 who are simultaneously learning core subjects in English and in Spanish. They all love learning through our projects!

My Project

My students are still learning how to read and write while learning a second language. They learn literacy in Spanish in a whole group setting, small group guided reading, and centers. Manipulative materials and games help to engage students in hands-on learning.

I want to provide an environment where students are learning through inquiry, manipulation and mostly connecting learning to a pleasurable experience.

Thus, once I have these materials, I will use posters to work on vocabulary and grammar in a visual way, manipulative materials to set up centers where students can develop decoding skills while working independently. Games will allow them to develop reading and writing skills as well as learn Spanish as a second language in an enjoyable way.
