Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 11th and 12th graders aged 16-20 in Bronx, New York. They are an intellectually curious bunch who seek to interrogate the world around them and want to learn about anything and everything.
They fearlessly approach all tasks on a daily basis but especially their analytical writing.
In order to continue to get better at their writing, they want to be exposed to as many of the best writers of all genres from all over the world. My goal is to create a classroom library full of authors that help them unleash their voices.
My Project
There is no bigger group of disadvantaged children in the New York City public education system than the English Language Learners. Within that group, the children most at risk of not having a rewarding academic experience are the upperclassmen in high schools who have yet to acquire the English language.
My school has a number of students who still only speak Spanish and not English, and we need more books for them to read!
They are really a great group of kids who have not had the opportunity to discover the love of reading. They are not ready for books in English. They need your help to get books in their home language.
