Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school strives to make every single one of our students college ready despite society's unfair assumptions of what their futures hold. Many of these kids have suffered from the various forms of systemic oppression that exist in this country, particularly in education and immigration. I hope that my teaching can be a small but impactful effort to combat these issues in an environment where it directly impacts these kids.
While the subject matter I will be teaching is Spanish, what I want every student to learn is that they are loved.
Above all else, my priority is to create a safe and productive learning environment.
Our school is centered in a predominantly Spanish speaking community, thus many of my students are native speakers. However, my 160 students will range from novice language learners to native speakers. I want all my students to understand the value of learning the language its differences across cultures, social contexts, and dialects. My classroom will be fluid in that I want to help my students improve their academic use of informal and academic use of the language, and I want to improve my knowledge of it informal settings.
My Project
Since I was not allocated a budget for my classroom, I am utilizing this site to avoid spending my own money (and limited salary!) on purchasing supplies and decorations. I am drawing inspiration from spectacular teachers I had in my own education who made their classrooms feel lively, lovely, and comfortable. One of the biggest reasons I decided to study Spanish is that it was my favorite class in high school. Learning about people's lived experiences is exciting and relevant and I want to portray that in learning space.
I want every corner of my classroom to inspire and bring joy to wandering eyes (because we all know that daydreaming is real).
Aside from fun banners and posters, what I need most is the basics like paper, notebooks, pens/pencils, turn-in bins, etc.
I plan to have students use these materials for taking notes, safely storing their classwork and assignments, and feeling like they are in an engaging learning environment.
