Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach reading, writing, and social studies to two groups of bilingual 5th graders at a brand new school in Austin, TX. My classroom has very diverse learning needs, with varying degrees of reading and language ability.
Many of my students are constantly asking for more books and resources in Spanish.
They want to improve their reading levels, but many of them are currently more confident in their Spanish literacy abilities. Research has shown that you must develop literacy skills in your first language in order to successfully transfer that knowledge over to a second language.
I want to be able to build a classroom full of strong, confident, biliterate students. They love to talk about how proud they are to be bilingual. They deserve to have access to exciting texts in both languages.
My Project
By having books available in Spanish, my students will be able to improve their Spanish literacy, which makes transferring over knowledge to English much easier. Additionally, students will be exposed to Spanish-speaking authors and culturally relevant texts.
I only have one Spanish book in my classroom that I bought at Target in August, and it is already extremely worn down from overuse.
We are lucky to have an amazing school library with 40% Spanish books, but we can only checkout once every two weeks. My students need frequent access to Spanish books in my classroom where they spend the majority of their time.
