I teach in a high poverty northern New Hampshire school of 160 PreK-6th graders. Teaching in a low-income school district, I know our students are faced with many challenges not only in the classroom but also outside of the classroom. With the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our students are creative, curious, energetic, and love learning and working on new projects.
They love to read, work on math problems, do science and STEM projects. All the while, they adore lots of positive attention. Many of our students are being raised in single-parent homes with almost 50% receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. Our school is committed to providing a safe and caring educational community. Students are encouraged to reach their full potential. They are active participants in the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary for future endeavors.
Last summer a fence was installed as a safety precaution for our students. While it is attractive, we want to plant perennials around it to make it more eye appealing. So by growing perennials, it will beautify the fence and also attract more bees, butterflies, and birds.
My Project
I recently worked with the fifth graders at our school to create winter sowing systems using recycled milk and water jugs. The fifth graders created mini-greenhouses and planted 20 different types of perennial flowers.
We are hoping that these small growing vessels will yield plants to decorate our school grounds.
We would like to purchase ten planters to transplant these perennials to during the spring. I would love to have planters as well as the planting soil to fill them. This will benefit our whole school community because it will make our school a more beautiful place and encourage growing plants in the north country. We have a community garden in Bethlehem, and it would be great if we could extend our growing of perennials to our community vegetable garden. Any time we can connect the school and the community, everyone wins.
