My students need a cultivator/tiller for our school gardens. We have six 10x12 beds that are difficult to cultivate by hand. We have developed a greenhouse and seeds are sprouting in abundance!

My Students

Imagine starting your formal education experiences in an unfamiliar place. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have emerging skills in reading and writing and you have this smiling teacher greeting you each day. These are the students I teach every day.

I work in an inner city school with very limited resources near the heart of Indianapolis.

Many of my students have very limited pre-schooling experiences and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. We help students learn literacy while struggling without resources that are readily available in todays marketplace. My students come from all around our district, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.

My Project

My class is developing a community garden for our school. We integrate all aspects of gardening with writing across our curriculum. Considering my students are between the ages of 5 and 8, and their digging/tilling skills are limited, a cultivator would be a blessing to our program.

My students have six 10x12 garden beds that will accommodate the abundance of sprouts they have seeded in our classroom greenhouse which they built.

Our gardens provide teaching opportunities in responsibility, patience, and caring which are values greatly needed by our inner city youth. The excitement, joy, and happiness of seeing a project go from planting seeds to sharing harvested goods with our student body is awesome and inspiring. It gives my students a sense of pride and worth.
