It has been requested by our avid readers here at the Middle College at Bennett College for Women that we create a book club. As per this request, I am soliciting your assistance in sponsoring this effort. This book club will help these readers to increase their vocabulary, improve writing skills, enhance comprehension skills, and develop critical thinking skills. Moreover, by engaging in discussions of the books, speaking skills will be strenghthened, and self-confidence will be heightened. In order to see an easy success at the beginning of this project, I have selected Life is Not A Fairy Tale by Fantasia Barrino. Twelve young women have committed to the book club, therefore a matching number of books are requested. The young women are excited about this selection, and are anxious to read it as a group. Ms. Barrino's personal testimony of overcoming adversity will be empowering for these young women, as they too have, to some extent, experienced similiar circumstances. Her success is exemplary of one who embodies the attitude, and the fortitude that we here at the Middle College at Bennett desire for our young women. As the English teacher, being an ardent reader and an advocate for literacy, I thoroughly encourage reading. I consider reading as a catalyst in the broadening of horizons. Reading aids in the expansion of knowledge of our world. Reading is the key to effect the transformation of unfortunate experiences into new realities hitherto undreamed of. Reading promotes creativity, self-awareness, and sparks the imagination Your assistance in the creation of a book club will bring this much needed educational experience fruition.
