I am a third grade teacher in the South Bronx. It is coming to the end of the year and I have planned several trips to take the children on. The problem I am having is most of my children are coming from single parent disadvantaged homes and simply can't pay to go on the trips. It is so difficult to find free trips in the city. After you go to the Museum of Natural History and Sony Wonder you usually have to pay a small fee for all trips. A small price can cause many of my children to tell me they can't go with us. I have tried to make up the difference several times this year so no one is left behind but sometimes it's just too many. Trips are especially important to my children because they aren't exposed as much as they should be. Several students have never gone to a movie , been taken to Manhattan or seen a live performance on a stage. Being exposed to these experiences are so valuable to the development of these young minds. For many unless the school takes them they will never have an opportunity to go on these types of trips. It breaks my heart when I see that a child was absent on the day we went on a trip and I know it's because their parent was just too embarrassed to ask me again to pay for their child. The first trip is to the United Nations in Manhattan. We have studied several countries around the world all year long. Seeing the UN for a tour will help them learn even more about the countries we have studied and new ones.
