My students come from a variety of backgrounds and over 90% of my students fall below the poverty rate. Many of my students also have learning challenges, therefore many of them have Individual Education Plans and modified promotional criteria.
My school is a 6-12 Title I public school in a high poverty area.
I serve a diverse population of students, who are in transition to the 10th grade.
One common fabric that glues students together is that they are disenfranchised and strive towards resolution. In fact, should they complete high school and pursue college, they would be the first in their family to attend college. While they are disenfranchised, they exhibit a relentless will to overcome social constructs and among other barriers to achieve their dreams. In addition, they are vibrant, participate in community restoration activities, and eager to take steps needed to improve community relations. In fact, they successfully orchestrated and carried out a cultural event that drew a wide attraction to their educational institution. The educational institution, which I am affiliated with established a stimulating and therapeutic community that facilitates learning, discipline, a sense of self, identity, and a sense of belonging.
We are requesting one MacBook Air and batteries so students can practice math skills at their pace. Also, students can get a in group and play math games that reinforce the skills they are lacking. They can take online skill tests that track their data and create more skill based lessons based on the data. It is critical to have the computer, as I have over fifty students behind in algebra. Having an avenue that a group of them can work together on math skills and see how math can be fun affords me time to work with everyone. Having this tool will also allow students who do not have a computer at home to upload their projects and homework to our class portfolio site. This will help students overcome their math weakness and gain more confidence in the subject. These tools will also help students prepare for their upcoming exams.
