Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher at an inner city public school located in the South Bronx. I have a heterogeneously grouped class of 25 students.
The student activity planned is a school garden. The students will be responsible for designing the space, choosing the plants, preparing the soil, planting and maintaining the garden for the duration of the school year. In order to do this project we need the following equipment:
- hand trowels
- shovels
- green garden fence
- stakes
- fertilizer
- Miracle Grow
- watering cans
- kneeling pads
- gardening gloves
- peat moss
- various seeds and bulbs
- trip to New York Botanical Gardens
This project will benefit the students across the curriculum. In science the students will have a hands on opportunity to use what they have studied regarding plant life to create the garden. There is a direct correlation between this project and the NY State Science Assessment Exam. This activity will give the students an opportunity few of them have had to experience a garden. In addition, our trip to the New York Botanical Garden will allow them to have access to professional gardeners and benefit from their expertise.
Math skills such as measurement will be used in designing the garden.In addition, graphing skills will be used to record the growth of the various plants. Social skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and cooperation will be developed.
Funding a project such as this will ensure that my students have the opportunity to learn many skills in a dynamic and fun way. Therefore I request, on behalf of my students, that you fund this project.
