About My Students

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. They provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms.

SkillsUSA students focus on career awareness, exploration, community involvement, leadership, professional development, and competitive events. Although SAHS students are ALL economically disadvantaged, we understand the importance of giving back ourselves! No child should go hungry or without basic hygiene products.

The CARE Closet is not simply an informational resource. It serves as an immediate and tangible "fix" for a very solvable problem. Each day hundreds of students come to school and leave school hungry or lack the basic hygiene items. Therefore, The CARE Closet at SAHS is a response to an issue that cannot be ignored. Students are unable to concentrate, perform, or focus when their most basic needs are not being met.

SAHS SkillsUSA created this project for the school as a need to our economically disadvantaged population. Students are feed breakfast and lunch daily at no cost or teachers assist with washing clothes, but what happens when they go home or on weekends? CARE Closet addresses these needs and allows identified students weekly to fill a backpack full of snacks, easily prepared meals, and hygiene products. SAHS SkillsUSA students are responsible for re-stocking and maintaining the CARE Closet.

In Their Own Words

SAHS SkillsUSA must ensure that our classmates are able to concentrate, perform, and focus daily by making sure our classmates do not leave school hungry or lack basic hygiene items. CARE Closet helps support students at SAHS and provide them with a basic needs that are absolutely essential for their academic success.

SAHS SkillsUSA realize that teachers can only provide so much support, as we watched teachers bring in food, wash students clothes, allow students to take showers, etc. but realized that we can also help. At SAHS, we are family and we must support each other growth and development. Success is build first by addressing students' basic needs.

We develop leadership skills through the development of this project. As a SkillsUSA members, we are required to participate regularly in community service projects. We researched and organized a specific community service project that would benefit the students of SAHS. CARE Closet met and identified the needs of the students at SAHS.

This project is important to us, as our classmates are our future. It is our responsible as students with the support of teachers, parents, etc. to support our classmates emotionally, physically, mentally, psychologically, academically, and socially. It is not enough to just educate our classmates! If our basic needs are meet, we are more likely to succeed in school.
