Sounds are something we hear everyday. Sometimes they drive us crazy and we wish they would go away. However, in my first grade classroom in Washington Heights a signficant amount of our day is spent on sounds and the various ways sounds can be mainpulated. Sounds, or phonemic awareness, form the building blocks of reading. In order for students to take off with reading, all phonemic awareness skills should be mastered. These skills--which included sound identification, rhyming, etc--should be mastered by the end of kindergarten. However, almost all of my first graders have very few of these mastered when they enter my room. Therefore, a lot of my year is spent doing catch-up from these unsecured skills as well as teaching beginning reading skills. There is an incredible sense of urgency to catch my students up to grade level as quickly as possible. In order to due this, I need additional materials that students can use to practice and secure their phonemic awareness skills. These include rhyming books, sound activity cups, and sound puzzles. All of my students can benefit from these materials to use during centers while I work with groups of students. Approximately three-fourths of my students are behind level when they start school. They need these materials so they can catch up to grade level as quickly as possible. These materials are not so much providing an experience for my students, but more of a necessity for them and their educational future.
