My students are in dire need of the following audio books to enhance and support their journey towards literacy: Holes, Shiloh, Where the Red Fern Grows, and The Outsiders.
In a world where reading governs everything we do,what happens when a word is just a bunch of letters? I am a special education teacher for a high school classroom and I support many various subjects in this classroom including literature, government, math, and basic skills. As a special education school we try to service our students specific to their individual learning styles. 94% of the students in this school are provided with free or reduced breakfast and lunch in accordance to financial status. As we try to realize the physical and emotional needs of our students it is also important to make gains in their educational needs as well.
A special education classroom is filled with students of many varying levels of literacy. Some excel in reading and grammar while others are far below grade standards. This is due to various disabilities including dyslexia, alexia, and spatial discrepancies. We strive to provide our students with a reading background that will enable them to not only read, but also enjoy reading. As a result of their improved reading ability it enables them to not only hold a job, but further be an active, successful and contributing member of society.
On the journey to literacy one of the most useful approaches is to immerse the student in language and providing the student learning opportunities to relate the words to a text. Often high school students that have a low level of reading are not provided with books of high interest, and as a result are not inspired to strive towards competent literacy.
While a teacher is meant to inspire, it is often hard to evoke the need or desire to read, especially in students who struggle with reading. By providing audio books to the students the teacher enables the students to delve into books that we enjoy and take for granted, books of high level interest to us. By so doing the student is able to follow along in the book, and be able to recognize words not just as individual components made up of letters, but as a beautiful story as it is meant to be experienced.
With your help, we can make the learning experience a much more engaging one. It is hard to acknowledge to one another the difficulty that can be found in reading a new word, at times it is almost like a different language. You and I can help make a difference though. By providing these students with a high interest audio book we are able to support their reading needs as well as recognize the necessary concept that reading governs the world we live in.
Provide help, make a donation, make a difference. We thank you, and when we write our words will thank you as well!
