Do you remember classrooms that used just books to learn facts? My students learn best using technology. It is difficult to get excited about data that is just on paper, but empowering students through art truly engages them. They can't wait to come to class and explore. My students make gains in learning as independent learners, researching facts at their own pace.
Envision the classroom of the future where students create their own learning experiences in a Maker classroom with science technology stations.
My 6th grade science classes are part of a public school in a growing suburban town in NH. Middle school students learn more by doing than reading. Science class is the perfect place to make discoveries. As the new national science standards are implemented, the focus is to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) lessons. They love to make connections to real world problems. Instead of hearing, "Why do we need to learn this?" I get students who can't wait to do things like forensics or other explorations. We use Google Classroom for our lessons. We wish to lessen our carbon imprint on the environment by using less paper and Chromebooks are the gateway to achieving this.
My Project
The science classroom of the future is student-led. The teacher is a coach. I have 25 students learning the same content in different ways. Some may be using textbooks while others are online researching and still others do lab activities. Online work usually involves watching short videos or completing interactive topics. All of these produce sound which can annoy the student next to them.
Headphones help the student to focus on their own work by blocking out other sounds and making sure the student hears the sounds for their topic.
Classrooms are extremely busy places and sounds can be overwhelming. My students love learning at their own pace but can also find it more interesting to see what another student is working on based on the sounds emanating from another area. Headphones will eliminate the distractions.
Often students may need to share a Chromebook due to availability. The audio splitters will allow 2 headsets to be connected to the same device. This allows both students to hear without adding sounds to the classroom which may distract others.
You can change their world! Your generous donation will inspire my students. They will excitedly look forward to using the headphones and audio splitters in our science world. You will help make science fun and meaningful to them. Please ignite the spark to their discoveries.
