Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle schoolers have so much going on in their lives. They are navigating arts and academics at a new magnet school. They are figuring out friendships and relationships as they get older. Athletes are learning about the joy and struggle of competition.
My students show me glimpses of who they will become.
When they gather around my desk to share a story about a silly sibling, or persist with an explanation until it's perfect, they show me a little more of who they are, underneath the middle school armor. My students are courageous kids, learning to become global citizens.
My Project
Forces and sound are science ideas, that once understood, can be used to explain all kinds of phenomena that occur in the natural world. Students took the lead when they generated questions they wanted to figure out, like "Can sound kill you?" and "Why do my windows shake when a loud car drives by my apartment?". Then they brainstormed different investigations they might try to get to an answer. By making claims and then gathering evidence with research and hands on science, students are engaged in the same practices as scientists.
Using these materials, students will investigate how sound from one object can make another object move.
Wired and bluetooth speakers will allows us to investigate sound in different media. Instruments and tuning forks will help us look closely at sound sources. Materials like the sign holder and dot stickers will help us investigate in a station rotation, while keeping everything organized. The small tool kit is for dissecting speakers (the cleanest and least smelly kind of dissection).
