Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Special Education teacher, I see students push through difficult academic experiences every day. My students teach me the meaning of perseverance and inspire me to be the best teacher that I can be. I teach at a Title I school where all students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Our mission is to provide quality first instruction, optimal challenge, and targeted support so that every student thrives academically and socially.
My students have different abilities that should be celebrated; in addition to their academic strengths, they are hard-working, funny, creative, kind, and empathetic.
I feel so lucky that I get to know them on a very personal level because I get to be their teacher for up to five years in a row!
My students live in a diverse, suburban neighborhood and bring wonderful aspects of their culture into the classroom. Getting to know their language, traditions, and heritage is an added benefit to working in this community.
My Project
My students love to read and be read to. They are exceptional students who have unique strengths, incredible amounts of creativity and imagination, and their perseverance and grit inspires me everyday. Sometimes reading is their biggest challenge but they still have a love for books, that's why they are so awesome!
All of my students have goals in reading, that's why books are the most important tool in my classroom.
These books on cd will be used for two things: 1. During reading rotations in my classroom and 2. As rewards!
When I am working with a small group, the other students need a meaningful way to practice what they know and improve their reading ability, without the support of an adult. Most of my students have a difficult time reading independently, that's why books on cd solve all of our problems! I can work with a small group of students while the rest listen to a book and follow along. This reinforces the words that they already know and teaches them new words in a fun way. They all look forward to books on cd!
Books on cd are so appealing that students will complete challenging tasks just for the opportunity to sit and listen to a good book! That's why my students are so awesome, they love books and never give up trying to be better readers.
