Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need headphones to use daily as part of their phonics-based reading program.
My 7th and 8th-grade students are in a self-contained program within an urban middle school of 900 students.
There are 15 languages spoken here with over 60% speaking a language other than English as their primary communication. Our district is a Group H school, the second lowest socioeconomic level in the categorized placements. Over 70% of our students receive free/reduced lunch.
My class of 17 reflects these statistics: Ten of my students do not speak English at home and ten receive free/reduced lunch. Despite this, they are funny, bright, and eager to learn...at their level and in their own way. Earlier in the year, I had been in contact with the director of a Revolutionary War museum to arrange a field trip. Not having worked with this population before, I know she was unsure about our visit. While there she warmly complimented our group, clearly impressed with our students. She said, "You have a right to brag!"
My Project
I am requesting headphones for my students to utilize when listening to the district-assigned reading software. In order to maximize learning, students need to be able to hear the phonics sounds clear and reply correctly. Right now most are using inexpensive earbuds brought in from home; clarity is an issue.
Each day we have a whole group lesson, then the students are placed into smaller groupings where they rotate 20 minutes of direct instruction, 20 minutes of independent work, and 20 minutes of individualized online lessons/practice on Chromebooks.
In the software, each student is able to move along at his or her own pace. It is crucial, though, that they are able to distinguish different phonics sounds in order to progress to the next skill. Having quality headphones would allow them to focus on the sounds without being distracted by outside noises.
My students worked hard this year to increase their Lexile scores, which is a difficult feat for children with learning disabilities, yet most demonstrated growth. The headphones I've requested would allow them to maximize the value tools available to them. Improved reading skills are a step toward a brighter future.
