My Students

Currently, I serve 20 students at an urban school right on the edge of Charlotte, NC. 63% of my students are below grade level in reading and 59% are below in math. In my class, 10% of my students have Individualized Educational Plans (IEP's). Many of my classroom materials have been passed down from previous teachers and the materials are very old and worn. Therefore, I would like to provide my students with new materials that are grade-level appropriate to teach literacy skills. For some of my students, this will be their only positive interaction with quality materials for the day.

My Project

The book "Sounds All Around" will help enhance my students' understanding of how sound is created and how sound works. The science unit on sound is exciting for the students. We don't have any books on sound and I'd like the students to be able to have this resource to use to help enhance their understanding and be able to go back and reread information about sound. "Sound All Around" will also be used as a nonfiction text to discuss with students nonfiction text features and how they can be helpful to readers with their comprehension and by focusing a reader's attention to key details within a text.
