Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at our school are seldom heard of. Their voices rarely travel past that of the school grounds. They need someone to give them the opportunity to show what they can do. I have met some amazing kids over the past couple of years, and it's time for them to light up the stage!
Our students are rooted in a Hispanic background and are proud of their history.
We have a great mariachi program at our school, which is also developed and supported by a rich elementary music education. Students show great enthusiasm for a variety of music, dance, theater, and performing arts. Unfortunately, they also have a great need for more opportunities. Currently the stage area has been piled with storage items, and has been that way for several years. It is my goal to get this area cleared and produce an area appropriate for sharing talents, achievements and excitement for learning.
Our students are learning to work together, appreciate individual and group success, and part of this accomplishment is in fact due to their increased musical and theatrical awareness. We have some truly responsible, creative, and amazingly bright young students here and giving them every opportunity to show what they can do is extremely important to their development.
My Project
The purpose of this request is to upgrade our stage area, which is also connected with the gymnasium. This request would be a step in the direction of eliminating several problems. One is the inadequate sound and acoustics of an area which could possibly be used for small group performances, plays, etc. Second, the area is used by the P.E. teacher, who would like to be able to use music for class instruction, possibly with parachute activities. Third reason, as previously stated, is that we already have a stage area that is not in use. The primary reason is the lack of audio equipment set up in the area. The stage is old, but very useful. The red curtain is a reminder of a passing era, but so rich in history. For students to be able to experience that history is priceless. If you remember the days of Johnny Carson and his "Tonight Show", the curtain was one of the hallmarks of a great entrance.
I can't wait to pull that red curtain and have my students make their entrance.
This is so important because we are so individualized these days, it really takes this group sharing of ideas to promote a positive future for our students.
I think this is something that gets missing with filling out IEP's (Individual Education Plans) and all of the individualized and small group learning. With this a whole grade level, or even a whole school can come together and celebrate their achievements. This really is only a start, because next comes lighting, costumes, props...
