Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Today you are you! That is truer than you! There is no one alive that is you-er than you!" - Dr. Suess. This is something that I continue to tell my students, by YOU and not what you believe others want you to be. For students in the 5th grade, this is extremely hard to follow. They are starting to discover themselves and have to face what society pushes on them. I try to include art, music, physical education, science labs and STEM challenges into my weekly planning. I strongly feel these subjects/activities are just as important to kids as reading, writing, and math. I strive to make kids' outside passions a part of our learning in the class. What better way to have their buy in when it comes to the academics they don't find as exciting?
My classroom is a space where students can be kids and focus on their education, not all the responsibilities they face after the end of the school day.
I want to bring in as many experiences to my students that I can!
My Project
I will be introducing my students to film making: writing scripts, videoing, and editing. Students are each assigned a Chromebook through the district, this is what students will be using to record with. However, picking up sounds and voices for their sketches when recording with a Chromebook is not optimal.
Students don't just need paper and pencil to show mastery of skills in a classroom.
How about creating a commercial for a movie release on a book they just read? How about filming an interview with a history figure they just learned about in History? Many students can express their knowledge easier than answering questions on a test. I want to bring their knowledge alive.
Students currently read weekly announcements over the PA system. Adding a video club will turn the announcements into a weekly newscast and expand the film making skills to others outside of my classroom. The arts have been taken from schools, I love to bring them to my students in my class. Films are just another form of art.
