My students need sewing machines and hand embroidery supplies to continue using our MakerSpace effectively. As other students in the school see what their classmates are doing, more supplies are needed to meet the growing popularity...GREAT!
We are a small (almost forgotten) school in a large city school district. We are located within walking distance of Susan B. Anthony's historic home in Rochester, NY. Our building was built in 1912, and while it still contains many incredibly beautiful structural elements such as tin ceilings, wood trim, stained glass, and a classroom fireplace, the building is hard to physically maintain. We have been slated to close but VERY strong community, parent, and teacher groups fight to keep us open and thriving.
Many librarians describe their library as being the heart of a building but our library truly is in the entrance of the school.
When you walk through the outside school doors, you are in the library, there are no doors to the actual library. This makes for a very lively and yes, noisy non-traditional library.
All of our students meet the state guidelines for free meals but this fact does not define them. They are energetic, inquisitive, and eager to learn new things. This year I have used my limited library budget to purchasing How-To books and the kids have LOVED the re-direction of the library towards a MakerSpace library.
My Project
Sewing is good for the soul. I have been introducing How-To projects into my library curriculum and the students have shown tremendous interest in the sewing projects. I only see the students every four days and they want to continue working on their projects on the in-between days. I love that both the boys and girls are showing equal interest in learning to sew.
Being able to borrow embroidery hoops and sewing needles from the library will greatly increase the time they can work on their skill.
The embroidery floss needs to be replenished at a rapid rate the the variety of colors will expand the range of pattern choices.
Some of the students have expressed interest in learning how to sew on a sewing machine and the addition of the two sewing machines on the wish list will help further the life-long skill of sewing.
