Help me support my Autistic students in thriving and enjoy learning using hands-on materials.
With the spread of Coronavirus, our safe space, our classroom, has been taken away, leaving my students in distress.
I teach a group of 12 students with Autism between the ages of 7 and 11 with varying learning styles. Some of my students can verbally express how they feel while others heavily depend on illustrations to express how they feel.
With the current budget becoming non-existent, I want to ensure, I can provide the basic needs for my students to help them thrive and find comfort in learning using hands on materials such as bins, math activity center, dray erase boards to practice writing and math, timer, and dry erase marker erasers.
Supporting me with materials will help me give my students, much needed items to bring some normalcy after a very emotionally challenging school year.
My Project
I teach in a D75 school and have a classroom of 12 children. The materials included in my project will serve as basics to jump start a comforting year for my students who thrive on routine and organization.
For instance, the colored bins will help keep their belongings in a secure place, the math center calendar will keep them organized and help them transition from one activity to another.
Additionally, the white boards will help them practice letter-sounds and phonetic words and practice math skills. The big timer plays a crucial role in ensuring students safely transition from a preferred activity to a less preferred activity. My students heavily rely on the use of a timer to know what activity or class is expected in a sequential order. Additionally, we will also be using it to learn to tell time using a digital clock.
