Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a freshmen reading teacher at South Shore School of Technology and I am in dire need of classroom supplies--namely books! Two years ago, South Shore HS divided into four small schools, each with its own focus (technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, and arts). In the process, the school of technology lost the majority of its novels to the other schools. When I arrived in September for my first year at the school (AND my first year ever teaching) I realized two very sad things: my ninth graders came to me reading at a fifth-grade level, and we had no books written at their skill level--or any written for a ninth-grade level. Throughout the year, my students have worked hard and have reached a ninth-grade reading level, but we still have no books! Since I feel it would be an injustice for students to move a grade without having read a novel, I decided to end the year with a unit on Elie Wiesel's book "Night." So far, I have been purchasing the books myself, but the cost has proven too much for me to bear alone. The students' experience in reading this novel has been more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Every day I have students in my room at lunch asking to read ahead. Every day other teachers make comments about students reading "Night" when they should have been doing classwork for other subjects. The response to this book has been overwhelming. Every day I observe my students broadening their world views and realizing that they don't hate reading after all. In fact, they have begun to LOVE it. Unfortunately, I can no longer afford to purchase books for my students, and several students do not have their own copies yet. I still need about seventy-five copies. My school does not even have money for copying paper, so they are not in the position to purchase more novels. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me light the spark that turns them into readers and students who show ownership for their own educations! My students and I would be forever grateful!
