Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I absolutely love teaching sixth grade in my district! All of the students in this urban, inner-city district receive free breakfast and lunch. My school is unique since it is an inter-district school and gives 30% of the surrounding suburban students an opportunity to become part of our school and family. We welcome the challenges and diversity, as my students become integrated, open-minded and tolerant individuals.
Sixth grade is a year of social, emotional and academic growth as my students stand on the cusp of becoming completely independent preteens.
They share a love of learning and are enthusiastic and motivated regardless of the severe budget cuts and lack of funding my students need to be successful and competitive to their suburban peers.
My Project
It is hard to believe that a school doesn't have the most essential supplies, including paper and markers, to run effectively. We have been in tough economic positions before with lack of books, copy paper and staff development. Yet, this year's lack of funding is indescribable. My classroom needs chart paper, markers, and basic school supplies to run with efficiency! My students' families can not afford to buy supplies for the classroom, especially when it is a struggle to just buy a backpack, pencils and a notebook.
School supplies are a right, not a privilege!
My students and I decided that we will not let the budget crisis affect our project-based classroom. This is the place where they can shine academically and socially and expand their minds! My classroom needs chart paper for daily mini-lessons and when students work in small groups. My children need markers and crayons to use on chart paper and projects. Since we are a project-based classroom, we create and build! As a result, we are in desperate need of tape and glue. With the appropriate supplies, I can ensure that my students have the proper toolbox to meet their academic potential and show them that we will not let big obstacles stop our ultimate goals!
