This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are dual-immersion learners. They learn two languages through the content areas. English-dominant and Spanish-dominant students learn both languages not only from me but from each other. Almost all of my students are from high poverty families and several are homeless. In addition, I have numerous students who are immigrants and others who are fleeing the loss of their schools and homes in Puerto Rico.
We are part of a high-poverty, urban middle school that specializes in the arts.
Students have the opportunity to shine in dance, orchestra, visual arts, graphic arts, and choir. Despite the many obstacles they face, they are rising stars who shine brightly.
My Project
At the beginning of the year, most students come to class with some notebooks, pens and pencils. Rarely do they arrive with all their needed supplies. Some come with none at all.
The majority of my students can not afford the basic school supplies like pencils, pens, highlighters, and construction and copy paper that will help them be successful throughout the academic year.
During the school year I pick up pencils off the hallway floors, take a free pen every time I go to the bank, and turn down no offer of used supplies. I do this because my school budget is $0.00. If I don't supply it, often the students won't have it
The supplies I am requesting, such as copy and construction paper, pens, pencils, highlighter, staplers, and scissors, are the things that we use every single day in class. My students want to learn, explore, write, research, and create. These supplies will help them be successful.
