Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am teaching kindergarten in a Dual Language English-Spanish Immersion program (DLI) in which my students will be the first cohort to participate in. This is exciting for our district as my school is the first to adopt this new program. This exciting new program needs support for successful student achievement.
My kindergartners are a bright, eager to learn group of students who are part of our Title I school community.
My school population has more than 75% that qualify for free or reduced lunch. My classroom is made up of some students who are hearing Spanish for the first time and other students who know no other language but Spanish.
My Project
This is an exciting time for our district to initiate our first Spanish Dual Immersion program (DLI). With it being a new program, I don't have many resources to help build this program for the ground up. My students can use these materials to help build a solid foundation in Spanish. The Spanish alphabet activity cards will help all students become experts in an important part of learning the basics of Spanish literacy. The picture cards will ease the unfamiliarity for the English speaking students. Our program is designed to teach Spanish 80% of the day, 20% in English. Half of my students are hearing Spanish for the first time, the other half of my students are native Spanish speakers. These materials will help me find a balance for helping teach the beginnings of Spanish literacy to all my students for the first time.
