My students need the microscopes to be able to efficiently carry out our science investigations of comparing small animals such as pill and sow bugs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever pick up bugs or animals and try to figure out why they act as they do? Why does a lizard's tail regrow and why or how does a roily poly curl up? One exciting project is a science project where students can compare pill and sow bugs by seeing them magnified.
Most of my students are bright and eager yet come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
They come to school with gaps present even before they step foot into the classroom. Their parents send them to school in hope of an education so they can lead better lives. We are a Title I school with 99% of the families earning below a certain income. Many of the parents volunteer in the classroom to alleviate the fact that we have little aide time in each classroom. This has helped greatly. Most students are from immigrant families. When doing homework often a brother or a sister will help yet often parents are trying their best.
My Project
The digital and the big screen microscope will both allow children to look carefully at insects we will be studying. They will be able to compare bugs and find patterns in how they look. Patterns and sorting/classifying are key standards in math in our state. The excitement and the images will be ingrained in their memories. How much of kindergarten and first grade do you remember? I only remember the fun activities.
Many students from disadvantaged backgrounds get little exposure to the "fun" parts of learning and school.
They come in with gaps while schools are scrutinized to increase test scores. Therefore often the main focus in schools is on math and reading. We are a school that has increased our scores dramatically in the last 7 years and I strive to find ways in science and art to make the experience a fun and exciting one in the hope that learning will not be boring but rather pursued.
