Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When sorting, it is necessary that children find connections to things they already know. Kindergartners tend to only think about objects in one way. We need to expand their thought process! I teach kindergarten in a very poor, rural area of NC. Most of my students are learning English and/or come to school with very few experiences. Their parents are eager for their children to become strong students but do not know how to foster that development

We try to offer our students many different kinds of learning projects that build their language through different and varied experiences. We have found that our children naturally look at objects through simple classifications such as color and size. We need our children to look beyond those basic ideas. The more connections that our students make, the better thinkers they will become.

I am asking for a variety of materials that allow our children to think critically in small groups and independently. These materials encourage students to sort everything from shapes, lines, and purpose, to species and living vs. non-living. These materials will be shared across four classrooms.

You can help make it possible for my students to become critical thinkers at a young age. We are requesting materials that will help our students make connections to foster complex thinking and vocabulary development.
