Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of 27 students are mainly English Learners in a Title 1 school who come to class every day motivated and ready to learn. They love listening to stories and absolutely enjoy doing art projects which are infused into the curriculum. In our class, we also incorporate a variety of learning strategies, whole group and differentiated small group instruction to ensure that each student's academic needs are being met. Meanwhile, I realize that majority of the 1st graders usually struggle with reading. In order to fix this dilemma, I strongly believe that this simple visual hands on Reading manipulative is the key that will help my students harness the necessary foundational skills for Reading. On behalf of my students, I THANK YOU in advance for your generosity. I believe that this amazing tool will culminate in my students being upcoming successful readers.
My Project
We see students struggle with reading at every grade level especially when they first come into first grade since this is the grade level they all begin to harness the basic foundational skills of Reading. So how can we get these students to learn to read? In a differentiated group setting of about 8 to 9 students, EACH individual student will be utilizing these interactive hands on magnetic alphabets whereby it will allow them to successfully build the foundational Reading platform for mastering letter sounds and names, developing Sight Words, decoding and blending, and Spelling. Manipulating these alphabets not only actively engaged the kiddos, but they also will have fun while learning. Lastly, this tool will also allow the students to cognitively process their thinking by enabling them to verbally sound out and blend. Overall, this simple yet effective manipulative definitely addresses and targets ALL the 4 critical components (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) of Reading .
