My students need science materials such as books about insects, microscopes, microscope slides, preserved insect specimens, and films to enhance their insect unit.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Special Education Center High School for students ages 14-19. Our amazing program is located in Detroit, Michigan. We have three wings that serve students with Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Severe/Multiple Impairments. We service students from the entire City of Detroit. Our school has 204 beautiful, young people with varying strengths and weaknesses. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities. I have students whose parents are my colleagues and students who live in boarded up houses. Some come from two-parent homes, and some come from three different homes.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
Could I bug you for a moment? Out of the many topics we discuss in life science, let me tell you: Insects and spiders are one of the most popular! Students are fascinated by each and every aspect of them from their appearance to their mysterious ways of creeping and crawling. My special needs science classes love to learn about bugs! However, with their special needs and our limited budget and resources, they are unfortunately not always offered the opportunity to delve as far as they want to go into a topic. I lack the hands on, technological, and visual items necessary to truly aid my students in learning all they would like about this fascinating topic.
With 15 special needs students per class, It could potentially take 15 different methods to teach any topic.
In special needs, every angle must be considered and addressed. Students need to be taught from visual, auditory and hands on perspectives. I am requesting items that will address each of these areas as it relates to insects and spiders. I am requesting a set of books about insects to teach vocabulary. We need microscopes, as we don't have any, along with slide sets for hand-on lab activities. We would like preserved specimen sets for our hands-on learners. The students asked for some science films, as they enjoy learning from them. Therefore, we needed to request a DVD drive as well. Finally some sorting activities were requested for students working at the introductory level.
Could we BUG you for a donation to our project? Thank you so much!
