Each child in my classroom (including me) absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My students come from a variety of different educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
No matter where my students come from they call our class home.
My Project
I want to take my students "Back to the Future" and teach them some old fashion social and life strategies skills by creating a weekly chance to play some board games. This current generation gets so caught up in playing or are required to work with technology, they seldom get to see or feel that old fashion way of learning. I want to make a difference in my students' perspective on types of learning.
I never thought I'd hear a student say, "Can I play Monopoly for homework." Well I did.
It was that statement that inspired me to take 2 steps back to bring my class 10 steps forward. Playing easy to learn, old fashion board games will teach my students the benefits of team work, communication, patience, strategies, and the difficult choices that have to be made to win, or to develop good sportsmanship. Games like UNO and Battleship not only can teach the former, but increase their academic content knowledge in reading and mathematics.
Playing games can also lead to excellent writing opportunities. Students will create awesome school memories playing these games. I want them to have special journals that they can reflect about, build upon, or to inspire the making of new and never heard of board games. This project gives my students another reason to make our classroom feel like home.
