My Students
My middle school students have high functioning Autism. They are very intelligent, eager to learn, and an absolute joy to teach. While many of them can produce close to grade level work, they have a hard time with social interactions and reading natural social cues. In addition, they have high anxiety levels which compounds their academic and social issues. A smaller self-contained classroom helps them cope with their anxiety, practice social skills, and learn in an environment without a lot of distractions. They thrive on rituals and routines.
My students rely on a small space in our classroom when they need time away from the class to calm down or cool off.
Even in a smaller classroom setting, my students still get overwhelmed easily. The smallest change (such as a substitute bus driver or a different item for breakfast) or disruption to their normal routine can cause a large amount of anxiety. When their anxiety gets too much for them to handle, they can go into the calming corner until they are ready to rejoin the class. The materials such as a bean bag chair, hand weights, fidgets, calming bottles will help them regain composure.
My Project
The resources I chose for my project will help my students when their anxiety becomes too much for them to handle. The sensory sand will give them a calming feeling, and they can begin to relax as they rake the sand. The blankets and the bean bag chairs will make the space seem cozy, and they will take away from any negative stigma about using the calming corner. The koosh balls can be tossed up and down in a calming manner. The calming bottles will provide a visual for them to look at while in the space.
My students will be able to spend more time learning because these resources will help reduce their anxiety.
The choices in the calming center will promote self-calming instead of fleeing the classroom to escape an over stimulating situation.
