Soothing Our Sensory Needs

Help me give my students tools to help soothe their sensory needs that allow them to fidget, squish, squeeze, move, and pop so that they can keep on learning!

My Project

I have a dynamic class of first grade students with many strenghts, abilities, and needs. We have poppits for students to use during math review and recess, and stuffed animals for reading buddies, but we are limited on other sensory materials. One day, a student who was feeling frustrated told me "I need something to squeeze." When I looked around the room and didn't find anything there, this project was born.

As young learners, my students are learning the basics of reading, math, writing, and phonics as well as how to work with others, be part of a team, and express their needs and emotions.

These materials will provide dedicated sensory bins for students with high needs as well as create a classroom bin where all students have access to these tools. Materials requested include balls and material that can be squeezed and stretched, additional small poppits that can easily be kept in a lap or desk, materials that can be moved and manipulated into different shapes, and sand timers to help students have a set break time before returning to their learning activities. By learning to keep their emotions in check, and their attention focused on the task at hand, my students will continue to learn and thrive!
