While my students vary greatly socioeconomically and demographically, one thing unites us - we are developing a love of reading, especially when they're given time and a comfy spot to do it.
With so many activities and busy lives, my classroom becomes one of the only places where students can find a quiet moment to enjoy reading.
Between Netflix, YouTube, sports, clubs, family commitments, friends and phones, students at this age group rarely make time for reading, so I prioritize reading as an important skill for life.
It's not uncommon for some of my students - including previously reluctant readers - to linger after the class bell rings as they work on finishing a chapter or section of their books. At our school, students can build a lifelong love of reading and learning.
My Project
Help me get my students on the right page by putting new books into their hands for reading workshop!
With funds from this campaign, I'll purchase exciting and challenging books for students to gobble up in our reading workshop.
We have started our year together devouring award-winning books of all types, and now we are ready to progress to more rigorous reading work together.
Research shows that academic achievement is linked to leisure reading. What better way for students to start a year of learning and growth than with delicious books!
