I am a second year, first grade teacher at Manierre School in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood. My students come from the projects across the street from the school and live difficult lives. I work very hard to make school, and my classroom in particular, a warm and welcoming environment. It is very important that my classroom is child-centered, so the students not only feel welcome, but have a sense of ownership over their surroundings. I find that when students have pride and ownership over their classroom they perform better in school. I am asking for a variety of supplies that will help the classroom become even more child centered and colorful, including chair pockets, desktop helpers, chart markers, and more. Chair pockets allow students to keep books on their reading level at their reach to use at any time. Desktop helpers put helpful basic information at the students fingertips, which allows them to work more independently and build confidence. One favorite learning activity in first grade is making charts and posters about what we are learning. Seeing posters that the students themselves created being displayed on the walls give the children a great sense of accomplishment. With the help of a generous donor, first grade at Manierre will be an even more colorful, child-centered experience than it already is! Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
