Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
So about a week ago we were on our way to our third softball game (which we won) and I hand over our bucket to one of the kids on the train... you know, to sit on as we ride. We squeeze into the train, get off 2 stops later and transfer over to the next train... I look around, I see the student, but no bucket. Our softball bucket was on its way to Brooklyn and we were on our way uptown Bronx.
There goes our warmup weighted balls, a glove, a mask, and a dozen balls; all gone... kinda upset, but I can't do anything about it now.
So now we need our replacements. We need weighted balls to warm up our arms. After a few throws with these weighted balls, the girls will be throwing bullets down to first. We need masks to protect our infielders, PSAL requires our 1st, 3rd, and Pitcher to wear them during games to prevent injury. We also need visors, our girls have had a few incidents where the sun is right on them and half of them didn't have anything blocking the sun.
