Ms. Troutman from Denver CO is requesting Lab Equipment through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Somethings Fishy in the Library!

My students need resources for their 50 gallon planted aquarium to replace older aquatic systems, such as updated LED lighting for plant health and a new Marineland filtration for ecosystem maintenance.

My Students

One of the driving reasons for why I teach in the elementary setting is the knowledge that strong educational access from an early age builds a foundation of inquisitive learning. This curiosity will support scholars through their entire life. My students live in a highly diverse community and attend school in a low-income region of our school district. Everyday these scholars walk through the front doors of our building trusting that, regardless of the challenges they face outside of school, we will meet them in the classroom with the tools they deserve to succeed academically.

Our elementary school is an inclusive and cooperative learning space where students have an opportunity to challenge their thinking, cultivate perspective taking, and grow their personal voice.

Through rich exposure to learning opportunities designed to meet their personal needs, I am confident that my students will be prepared for the years to come. These are caring children who are thirsty for learning.

My Project

The 2018-2019 school year will be the first year that our school has a fully functioning library! In preparation for organizing that space and creating an environment that fosters curiosity, we are moving our 50 gallon freshwater aquarium to its new home among the books. Our five year-old mature 50 gallon aquarium needs new equipment in order for it to continue to house our Mollies and Guppies. Some critical resources that are needed include a longer Python aquarium maintenance system to accommodate a greater distance from the sink and the aquarium's new home. We also need updated LED lighting to support new lighting conditions for live growing plants.

Our urban students deserve to learn in an environment that is surrounded by natural elements, and our planted freshwater aquarium is a perfect complement to that goal.

We want to do what we can to ensure our new library is able to use the aquarium to foster student learning. To accommodate this, we are asking for a few printed resources to accompany the hardware needed to cycle and maintain aquarium health. These printed resources include nonfiction texts about freshwater fish and texts about the water cycle. Imagine how great is it going to be to have mini-lessons about environmental factors and water ecosystems while sitting near a thriving school of fish!
