First grade galore! These munchkins at this age are one of the best ages to teach. They are curious, hard-working, and always up for a good challenge or exploration.
Better yet, creativity is the best part about this age, and differentiation sometimes takes a lot of creativity!
Because I am in an integrated co-teaching environment, some of my students in first grade also have Individualized Education Plans based on their special needs such as Speech and Language Impairment or Occupational Therapy. Most families here are low-income and students eat free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. Everyone is hardworking and incredibly sweet!
My Project
It's that time of the year again! First grade is getting ready for our social studies unit on restaurants! Though there is a lot to be studied about who works in restaurants and why restaurants are an essential part of our communities, I am most excited to bring these children on a field trip that many have never experienced. In addition to this trip where they get to become chefs themselves, they will read books, watch videos, and visit restaurants to immerse themselves into the culinary scenes both as workers and as customers.
Imagine seeing the smiles and lighted eyes on 6 and 7 year olds when they walk into a beautiful kitchen filled with tools and ingredients ready for them to learn to cook and bake!
How often do they get to do that? Rarely! Freshmade is a positive experience for all of my students, allowing teamwork, diligence, precision, mathematics and measurement. They will all get to learn the important steps to making a specific item and in the end, enjoy the deliciousness of every bite they worked hard into making possible. Although we don't know the exact food we will be making yet, all of the available options are readily accessible and easily instructed so that each student will be able to participate. Please help us give every child a chance to come on this trip and learn what happens behind the scenes in a kitchen!
